Balancing a Hairstylist Career with a College Bound Senior!

Being a parent is a fulfilling and challenging role on it's own, but when you are also a hairstylist, the balancing act becomes even more intricate. As my eldest son enters into the exciting phase of graduating high school and preparing for college, I am happy to announce that I'm a proud Temple University MOM! While the demands and responsibilities of both worlds can sometimes feel overwhelming, I will share the unique experiences, joys, and challenges of being a hairstylist while supporting your child's educational journey.

  1. Nurture Creativity:

As a hairstylist, our profession thrives on creativity and self-expression. It's essential to channel your creative energy to create stunning hairstyles. To help channel my creativity, I allow myself time to recharge and relax. Taking breaks from work allows my mind the space it need to generate fresh ideas and inspiration.

2. Time Management:

As your child embarks on their college journey, it's crucial to find a balance that allows you to be present for their important milestones while meeting the demands of your clients. Plan your schedule meticulously, ensuring you have dedicated time for your child's events, such as sports, college visits, orientation, and move-in day. Communicating your availability and limitations with your clients will help establish boundaries and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

3. Build a Support System:

Being a hairstylist and a parent with a high school senior can be overwhelming at times, and having a strong support system is essential. Reach out to fellow hairstylists, join professional networks, and connect with other parents who are navigating similar journeys. Sharing experiences, advice, and even swapping responsibilities can provide much-needed support and understanding during this busy time.

4. Embrace Flexibility:

Flexibility is a significant advantage as a hairstylist. It might be one of the reasons you chose the profession. Use this to your advantage while supporting your child's college journey. Explore options such as working part-time during certain periods or adjusting your schedule to accommodate important events. Embracing flexibility allows you to be present for your child's achievements while still pursing your career aspirations.

5. EncourageIndependence:

As your child transitions from high school to college life, it's essential to encourage their independence. While you support their educational journey, empower them to make decisions, solve problems, and take responsibility for their own success. By doing so, you can focus on your career while knowing that your child is capable of navigating their new chapter.

Conclusion:

Your child graduating high school and attending college in the fall is a unique and fulfilling journey. It requires careful balancing, effective time management, and nurturing both your career and your child's aspirations. By embracing creativity, building a support system, and fostering independence, you can successfully navigate this exciting phase of life. Remember, it's a journey of love and ambition, and with dedication and determination, you can excel in both roles.

Good Luck,

Shawn D.
